Delivering Hope:
What It Takes to Be a Direct-to-Patient Delivery Driver

When it comes to delivering critical medical supplies, every minute counts, and every mile matters. The role requires precision, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to patient care, because behind every delivery is a life-changing or potentially life-saving healthcare product.

For Leroy Langley, Head Driver at our Portsmouth, UK depot, his daily routes are anything but routine. Mostly Leroy’s routes take him around England’s South Coast, but changes to deliveries or stepping in to cover other drivers’ routes (due to holiday or illness for instance) could see him driving as far north as London on one day, or as far west as Bristol the next.

Wherever the destination, a carefully planned route and a satnav remains a faithful co-pilot, but what truly guides him is experience and purpose: “All of us drivers understand the importance of what we do, and the big impact that these products make to people’s day-to-day lives.”

Committed to delivering with care

In healthcare logistics, the driver’s mission is clear: to ensure each item reaches the patient punctually and safely, to precisely where it is required. This could mean that the delivery is carried across the threshold of the patient’s home and into a specific room, or to the reception of a care home or healthcare facility.

The variability of each of these deliveries requires patience and attention to detail from our drivers, which is why they are allocated up to 10-minutes per drop, to ensure that the driver can check on the welfare of the patient, or to allow extra time to complete the delivery to a larger facility with limited access.

Commitment and perseverance are fundamental factors to being a Life Couriers driver, coupled with a deep understanding of the importance of these healthcare essentials to their recipients; a fact that is clearly displayed in our Direct-to-Patient delivery statistics. In July 2025, the UK Direct-to-Patient network delivered 54,282 deliveries with an outstanding first-time delivery success rate of 99.95%.

“We’re aiming to get these products safely delivered to the patient first time, every time”, says Leroy. “While that isn’t always possible for various reasons, we’re proud of the fact that we average a 99.9% first time delivery-rate.”

Tackling complex deliveries with planning and patience

From hospital loading bays to assisted-living facilities with restricted access, each delivery presents unique challenges. To ensure the accuracy of our drivers, detailed delivery notes provide crucial insights, including an alternate delivery point (ADP) to leave the items if no-one is home or available to answer the door.

Given the potential variability of each transport, what is most important to Leroy and his colleagues to ensure the safe delivery of these life-enhancing and sometimes life-saving products? “Because every delivery is different, I think one of the most important things here is to be patient. Sometimes a delivery can require a phone call to the depot, then to the reception of the facility to be let in to make the delivery.”

To mitigate these possible issues and avoid potential delays, Life Couriers drivers are empowered by state-of-the-art navigation software which plans out their routes in advance: maximizing efficiency, reducing emissions, and staying up to date with the latest traffic reporting and roadworks.

As well as our advanced routing software, our drivers are empowered by our network of support staff in our depots, who are quick to respond to any issues a driver may encounter on their route. While our fleet of vehicles is maintained to the highest standard (including the recent addition of EVs for a modernised and more environmentally friendly delivery to our patients), given the changeable nature of transport by road, issues can occur during transportation.

Our team of logistics managers and supervisors, stationed at strategic transport hubs, have the capability to deploy another driver in the rare case of a vehicle breakdown, or to provide additional support to the driver in the case of traffic or weather-related delays on the road. “We have systems in place to make sure these deliveries reach the patients who need them”, states Leroy Langley, showcasing the tenacity of our team to ensure that the needs of the patient is always prioritized.

Robust planning for a patient-led approach

At the heart of our Direct-to-Patient service is the combination of technology, resilience, and careful planning, culminating in a dependable and award-winning service which puts the patient first.

One thing that our teams around the world understand is that sometimes in the logistics industry, things don’t always go according to plan. However, with robust countermeasures and a reliable support network operating from each depot, obstacles can be overcome with expertise, ensuring that each delivery safely reaches its destination. Each driver goes through rigorous training to guarantee our high standards are met and that each patient receives the same exceptional level of service that our impeccable reputation is built upon.

Reflecting on his outlook as a Life Couriers driver, Leroy observes: “My team and I know that what we’re delivering might just look like a box to some, but for the patients we deliver to, it can mean independence, a healthier life, and a lot of the time, hope.”
