Radioligand Therapy (RLT) represents one of the most advanced and fast-growing areas of modern cancer treatment, providing oncologists and healthcare professionals with previously unattainable clarity to diagnose and target cancer cells.
RLT is proving to be life-changing for cancer patients, however its success requires an intricate process of production, quality-testing and logistics to safely transport these life-saving radiopharmaceuticals to hospital or clinic. Therefore, safe, compliant, and punctual delivery requires an equally advanced logistics partner.
Life Couriers partnered with a global, industry-leading pharmaceutical organization to design and execute a specialized radiopharmaceutical transportation program capable of supporting large-scale RLT deployment across multiple treatment sites across the globe. Utilizing the company’s regulatory expertise and operational precision enables the successful transport of time-critical radiopharmaceutical therapies time and again, resulting in a measurable impact on the lives of patients.
RLT and the future of cancer care
Radioligand Therapies represent a critical step forward in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer. By combining a radioisotope with a targeting compound (the ligand), which binds selectively to biomarkers in tumor cells, healthcare providers gain previously unachievable results in cancer treatment. This allows practitioners to target and destroy specific cancer cells while reducing or eliminating the negative impact on other healthy cells.
The precision achieved by the treatment itself also applies to the rigour required to transport all the materials involved in RLT manufacturing, from reactor to production facility, and finally to hospital or clinic. The relatively short half-lives of the radionuclides involved demands operational excellence and allows zero margin for error regarding timely shipments and safe handling.

The growth of RLT monthly deliveries made by Life Couriers from 2024-2025.
Life-saving healthcare requires industry-leading logistics
Working with our pharmaceutical partner in the United States, the Life Couriers team established a collection and delivery schedule built around multiple weekly collections of source material from the reactor. This is carefully synchronized with reactor production cycles and the next stage in the RLT manufacturing process.
The collected isotope is transported by the Life Couriers team under strict regulatory and safety protocols to ensure that these materials are compliantly delivered to production sites in the continental US within an optimal time window for formulation into a radioligand.
The journey from reactor to production site is only the first step of the process of creating these life-saving products and once the ligands have been bonded to the radionuclide in the production facility, the resulting radioligand is formulated, quality-tested and packaged for clinical use. Finally, these need to be transported as quickly and safely as possible, along with intention and precision to the hospital or clinic, anywhere in the continental United States.
These deliveries would typically occur by road within the United States, however our capabilities and extensive global logistics network enable us to arrange the collection and transportation of Radiopharma in-line with the most stringent compliance guidelines. Life Couriers is one of four companies in the U.S. with US DOT special permit 8308 for Class 7 radiopharmaceuticals meaning that our customers are assured of the utmost expertise and care when handling their products.
Fail-safes and a zero-failure mentality
The transportation of radiopharmaceuticals is governed by stringent regulations at the federal, state, and international levels. Life Couriers leverages our 45+ years of experience in the safe handling of radiopharmaceuticals to maintain strict compliance with regulatory requirements and preserve the safety of these materials. Our network of expertly trained drivers meet all compliance requirements with OSHA, HIPAA and Hazmat standards, completing every delivery to the highest of safety standards.
At every stage of transport, building redundancies and safeguards against unexpected delays is crucial to the ongoing success of these deliveries. Since any delay to the transport of these materials, from the pick-up location to the destination site, could result in obsolete products with greatly reduced or zero medical benefit to the patient. By executing a delivery schedule that leverages our strategic and unique network in the United States, we’re able to build-in layers of redundancies, such as providing additional support vehicles, alternate drivers, predefined backup routes, and in some cases charter flights, to mitigate delays from potential disruptions.
Another additional layer of support is provided by the Life Couriers control tower network: offering around-the-clock logistics assistance, and advanced routing and backup. Our control towers are staffed by logistics specialists who monitor every portion of the journey, ready to intervene in the event of a route disruption or incident to avoid delays to these time-critical shipments. The strategic location of our control tower network allows Life Couriers teams around the world to provide an industry-leading level of service with the oversight and flexibility of our support team.
Our logistics expertise is underpinned using advanced technology for real-time tracking, monitoring and communication. Our customer’s shipments are tracked via GPS from origin to destination with continuous updates on location and temperature. When combined with a zero-failure mentality of our teams across our network, our drivers and logistics experts understand the impact that RLT and associated radiopharmaceuticals can have upon the lives of the patients they help; therefore failure is not an option.
Reflecting on Life Couriers’ culture of excellence within Radiopharma Logistics, Josh Chriscoe, Life Couriers Global Head of Radiopharmaceuticals, said: “I am proud to be part of an organization that has invested in this space. It gives hope to patients and their families across the globe that time and distance challenges do not stand in the way of their treatment. Life Couriers has developed a proprietary transportation process that ensures a near 99% on time delivery to ensure each patient will be treated on time, every time.”
An agile and dependable solution to help save lives
What this ongoing partnership showcases is the need for a dependable logistics solution when patient lives are at stake. Any deviation from meticulously planned routes, fluctuations in temperature, or damage to packaging could result in radiopharmaceuticals that lose their viability to diagnose or treat cancer. By providing full transparency and accountability to our customer, Life Couriers has enabled the reliable production and distribution of advanced RLT treatments across a growing network of sites.
A logistics partnership should be built on trust and underpinned by consistency. By centering our services on the patients that these products treat, coupled with unwavering adherence to regulatory standards, we’ve earned the confidence of the world’s leading healthcare and pharmaceutical brands.
As demand for Radioligand Therapy accelerates, Life Couriers remains committed to evolving our service offerings, to keep pace with the advancing landscape of Nuclear Medicine. By strengthening our infrastructure, and working closely with pharmaceutical innovators, we aim to improve health outcomes for patients everywhere.
